Todos and Wedos
Boonan is organized around todos...things you want to do. Unlike an ordinary todo list, however, on Boonan you can keep a todo private or make it public as well as joint.
- Public todos, known as Wedos, are visible to everyone. People around the world can view or follow your Wedo. If you set the Wedo to
and then people from around the world can join you in carrying it out by clicking . People can also follow a wedo by clicking .
- If you make a Todo joint but not public, then others can join, but only those you invite.
- Finally, Todos that are neither public nor joint are entirely private and visible to you alone
Using these settings, you can fine tune how social you want to be.
After creating a Todo or Wedo, you can change the public and joint settings. However, once someone else has joined a Todo or Wedo, you cannot remove the joint status. Joint Wedos and Todos can only be marked done when the founder agrees they are done or when three people vote that the Wedo or Todo is done.. If you start a Todo or Wedo and then mark it done, the other joint members can still continue it.
To view Todos that you have already done, click Todos on the menu to display a list current todos. Then on the far right, click the heading Done? to view Todos that you have done. To mark undone, uncheck the box in the column Done?.
You can create links within private todos to people. Say you have a todo, Call Bobby and you want Bobby's phone number close at hand. Highlight Bobby using your cursor. Then click on 'link' and Boonan will search for Bobby. When Bobby's name appears, click on his name to create a link. When you click on it, his contact info will appear.
Points
You can award yourself up to 5 points per todo. Upon completion of the todo, the points will appear in your total payoff balance. You also receive a payoff for tasks including creating contacts, inviting others to join a todo and when others accept or complete a todo you invited them to perform.
With public and joint todos, you can earn more than 5 points based on the points added to the todo by others. Anyone can raise or lower a todo by one point. But others cannot lower the number of points below the payoff you have assigned. Upon completing a joint or public todo, you will receive the total payoff in effect at that time.
Boonan supports many different profile photo options from the profile page. If you have a webcam and Flash installed, on the profile page, snap a photo of yourself. Our sofware lets you apply Instagram-style filters. If using a smartphone or tablet, click upload and you will have the option to take a photo of yourself (with IOS6 and up on Apple and most other software). Or you can upload an existing photo from your pc, tablet or phone.
Whether you snap a new photo or upload an existing one, our software will automatically crop and resize your image to a standard format. The best photos for your profile and comments are headshots with your face near the center. Toplit photos are great. If using our webcam software, use our filters to get a Hollywood vintage, 1960s or black and white photo.
If you do not upload a photograph, Boonan also supports gravatars providing you have supplied Boonan with the same email address you supplied to gravatar.com. Once you upload a photo, the photo will take the place of the gravatar.
Other Photos
Besides the profile photo that appears next to your name throughout the site, you may also upload photos for Todos, People and Things and "Proof Pics" that illustrate your progress in carrying out a Wedo. Upload photos from your computer, phone or tablet or grab them from the web, using the upload boxes that appear on pages where this is allowed. In addition to uploading photos, you can embed links to photos in the comments sections of the site to demonstrate progress on your todos or show others. To embed photos you find on the web, get the link to the photo, and copy the link into the comments box. Then select it with your cursor and once it is selected, click on the pic button. The code needed to make it display properly will automatically appear around the link. When you save your comment, the photo will display at a size appropriate to its location on the site.
Proof Pics
A special category of photos are proof pics you upload to prove you have completed a Wedo. Upload these from the upload box found when you click Upload Proof Pic on the Wedo page. Once uploaded, people can vote for or against your completion of the Wedo. When you secure three votes, the Wedo is marked done.
Video
We currently do not host video but you can embed links to video hosted by sites such as YouTube within comments posted to Boonan, for example, comments below Wedos. To embed a video link, copy the code from your video hosting site and paste it into your comment on Boonan. When you post the comment, the video will appear.
Boonan lets you upload files such as PDF and MS-Office files to go with Todos and Wedos, Activites, People and Things. These files do not display on the page but can be opened for view or download at any time. Uploading files to Activities and Todos is a great way to organize your data and give you access to information you need when you need it. Allowed file types are: txt, pdf, doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx, jpg and gif. You may not upload other file types or files larger than 2 megs.
The best way to find people on Boonan is through your email address book. We support gmail and many other popular email providers. To find people through your address book, go to Invite People and follow the link to import contacts. It takes only a few clicks to transfer your entire address book to Boonan.
The true meaning of Boonan is a closely held secret known only to a few core members of the Boonan team. Some believe it relates to a life supporting tree found in the rain forests of Papua New Guinea. Others say it is derived from the word balloon. Perhaps the most appealing if unproven explanation is that it is related to the basic uplifting force in the universe, described if imperfectly by Plotinus in his theory of the spheres that lifts people to their full potential.
